Archiving Completed Projects

Is it possible to archive a completed project instead of removing it?

Re: Archiving Completed Projects

I have just been moving it to the bottom of the list and renaming it to "[Zzz] Project Name", for now. hopefully there is some form of archival in the future.

Re: Archiving Completed Projects

Great idea AmberV!

Yeah, we are thinking about some archival functionality, but we are not there yet... there are more important features to implement than this as for now, but something in the future will be done in this regard - that's for sure.

Re: Archiving Completed Projects

I'd like to second this feature request.  Part of GTD "doctrine" is creating lots of small projects.  It would be great to keep old projects around for reference, but remove them from most of the project lists.  It would also be nice if they didn't count towards the active total for account purposes.

Re: Archiving Completed Projects

Hi Michael,

First off, great work.  Enough simply can't be said for the program as it is now.

How is project archiving coming along? I have the basic membership, and really did not want to upgrade my membership because of the 30 project limit, and having more then 30 projects going at a time, most of which are completed projects.

Renaming the projects to "zzz" as someone originally suggested only works for so long until you have newer projects coming in forcing you to simply other projects.

Thanks again.

Re: Archiving Completed Projects

Thanks, we'll be trying to roll of this feature as soon as possible, but probably by the end of August since we have other higher priorities now - like we are announcing Due dates and repeating tasks today smile

But don't worry  - this feature is still in the development pipe.

Re: Archiving Completed Projects

Hi Michael - Glad to hear its in the pipeline, as this is going to be important.   Probably either requiring a "Show archived" checkbox in the projects list, or maybe a "system tag" called "[ARCHIVE]".

Of course, the latter would require that the Tags mechanism work like true tags -- i.e., you can select multiple tags to be "on" at a time.  Right now, I can only click one tag at a time, so really it's not a tagging system but more like the ability to belong to multiple folders.  I think a true tagging system would be more powerful.

Re: Archiving Completed Projects

I also think this is a great idea, but please make it easy to get a project back from archive.  Here;s why.  I have a number of projects that I execute repeatedly over the course of the year (e.g. monthly, quarterly or even annually).  Each time they are composed of the same actions.  It would be very convenient to be able to just bring the last iteration back from archive as a set.

Re: Archiving Completed Projects

If could weigh in on the subject...

Why not make an "Archive Project" function that will allow you to download all tasks (completed & uncompleted), notes and files into a single zip file.

The task and notes information could be an xml file, or HTML page. Should you want to re-open the project, just upload the xml back into Nozbe, it parses the file and puts back all your tasks and notes. All you have to do is upload the files again.

Alternatively, the files could keep sitting in your file storage, but that would go against your file allowance depending on what program you're on...

Just my 2 cents,

JB

Re: Archiving Completed Projects

Michael - an update on the status and design of the archiving feature would be useful.

Are you planning to keep the archived data up on your servers, or allow users
to take it off, or both?

I can't yet decide whether my attitude to the information captured by Nozbe is
transient, or whether it is also a log.

I'd like to encourage you to provide an "export to XML" feature, so that I can keep copies
of nozbe data in my own storage system; I know from long experience that nothing
beats having a greppable archive of stuff.

Great ideas over here - we'll let you know which of the ideas will finally be brought to Nozbe but your feedback is amazing, thanks!

Re: Archiving Completed Projects

I would recommend a change that might serve as an interim archive option.  Before removing the project, print A4 to pdf.  The change needed for this to work is to print completed tasks if the "click to view completed tasks" has been activated to show those completed tasks.  Right now they don't print.  While this won't save files and the like, at least you will have a copy of the project and all of its tasks.  I would like real archival/backup to be available at some point though.  John

Re: Archiving Completed Projects

...or just open up the API for completed items so other people can implement it themselves if they want to.

Re: Archiving Completed Projects

I second that, shinghei.  (Michael, there is an unanswered thread about that - http://forum.apivision.com/viewtopic.php?id=223 -- can you at least clarify whether the absence of historical completion info is (A) a bug in the API implementation, or (B) intentionally withheld for now until more of your calendar strategy unfolds.)

One of the big pluses of SaaS is that everyone can add value, which ultimately benefits your customers.   I think what you are hearing from some of us is that we're willing to add some of the value if you make some minor extensions to the API.

Re: Archiving Completed Projects

Archiving projects is one of our top priority right now and should be ready very soon at last.

We are also working hardly on more API calls and our new developer should handle that very quickly. Yes, I'd love to have SAAS boost Nozbe usage so don't worry - you'll be supported.

Thanks a million for your comments and feedback - it keeps us working over here :-)

Re: Archiving Completed Projects

Glad to hear that it's a top priority. smile
Can't wait! I have 10 projects in my Nozbe account that have been completed and are ready to be archived. This will be crucial for me as I have created 26 out of 30 projects.
